Playing worse after studying

Hi all,

I don't know if this is just me or if this is a legitimate phenomenon, but whenever I seem to study new positional concepts/endgame,heck even tactics trainer,my chess performance gets worse...like I can't see sh*t,do the most elementary blunders. How to rectify this situation?Anyone else have this problem?

It sucks because these things are supposed to help your chess, not hurt it...and it's fun learning to play in new ways...but it seems to be hard to "internalize" these new concepts.
it happens to me too.its because u are not used to these new ideas yet
Sometimes you just need to take som time off and let yourself process everything you've learned. If you study hard for a day and then play, you are already exhausted.

I’ve noticed that knowledge somehow needs to be transferred from the active consciousness down into the subconscious mind. Compare it with riding a bicycle or driving a car - this is something you just “do”. This process takes time, so I agree with @lovlas - take some time off.

The paradox of playing chess using an autopilot but in critical positions be able to add your conscious chess knowledge/thinking on top of the autopilot. Mixing the autopilot with active and (hopefully) strong decisions in your play.

Something like that :)
There's a proverb in Go/Baduk that goes something like "Studying opening theory will put you back three levels."

The idea is that you become obsessed with the new knowledge and since you haven't actually used it yet, it's actually in the way of playing. Once you absorb it so you don't have to think about it when you play, your play will improve.

Don't stop studying! It really helps, even if in the short term you feel like it's hurting your game.
Hehe...I'm glad I'm not the only one :)

@lovlas You mean a break from studying or from playing?

@justonefix hehe yeah I guess it's just a matter of time to transfer the knowledge into the subconscious...

@liminal oh no worries I won't stop studying chess it's immensely rewarding...maybe play more slower games to internalize the knowledge a bit faster :)
@CerebralAssassin19 When I was first learning to play my game would drop off for a bit, then suddenly leap well past where it was before. It was as if my brain needed time to sort out new information. This happened several times.
@ Paradise_Peat
That is so crazy how that works, I will have my ratings fluctuate by as much as 350 rating points within like 2 days!
