I got the answer, and after I got it, I thought it was too silly.
pay attention to the lines carefully: "Mary: I went out to see the birds after you guys screamed"
1) after everyone screamed, the sound would be too loud , so the birds will fly away
2) why would someone rush to see the birds when everyone are screaming?
3) just a common-sense thing to say, WHY WOULD SOMEONE GO TO A LATE NIGHT PARTY TO SEE THOSE BIRDS?!
