Loss by forfeit of time is not bad sportsmanship-true or false?

Hi Dear lichess.org Community

We hear often a discussion about it

In ultrabullet, bullet or blitz games it is certainly perceived differently that in long games

Magnus Carlsen also played to the end even he was in lost position

What is Your opinion about it-is it bad sportmanship to loss by forfeit of time?

I encourage You to discuss
Playing to the end is good practice. Your opponent might drop a piece or stalemate you or not see they've won and offer a draw or get disconnected etc. Dunno what you mean by "forfeit of time" though.
I don't think that is what is annoying some of the community. Losing on time is perfectly fine. But sitting down your clock just to annoy your opponent isn't.
Well exactly. Forfeit in time in that case has absolutely nothing to do with Carlsen playing to the end - it's the opposite.

It's impossible to know why a given person didn't move in a given name, but it is clearly possible for more info to be given to prospective opponents about a player before a game starts so they can decide whether they want to play it. Loads of information is available to Lichess so perhaps it makes sense to make some of it available to players. If you were about to play someone and it said "this player has not moved in the last n% of the game in the last x games" or, for a 15 minute match "this player didn't move in the last 5 minutes of the last 12 games" or similar you might decide to play someone else. We could argue about the text or the stats, or maybe just allow people to chose the threshold themselves. I'm sure if the defaults were to allow people to not move at all in the last 5 minutes of the last 20 15 minute matches" people would soon change them. Or if this is too in-your-face then maybe provide a URL for people to be able to look this up themselves.
Agree with lovlas, I think it comes down to intent of the time forfeit. It's not against the rules to run out the clock. Sometimes emotions run high and getting back at the winner is designed to spoil the victory.

I really don't see this as upsetting because it just means to me they are desperate for a win and I already planned to play for that long. If it happens I pull up some puzzles or a video and wait to see if they play the next move.

On a side note, if a player abandons and starts a new game. I don't wait. I take the win and play on.
quit game without resing is $%&/(, but, play in short time to the end is good to training defense. Sometime u win agains a cheap opponente.
