I would report, but I don't know if it's anything other than poor sportsmanship

That's a pity :( but the moment you accept time to be part of the game, this is a valid strategy. The best way to shame the player is to go for checkmate. If you do not find that ... then it sucks, but the player strategy was correct

Disclaimer: I am a bad player that plays almost always on time

But nobody forced to play on a mousepad, right? It's not like he had an avantage; you *put* yourself at disadvantage by your own choice of weapon. You should play longer game if you know this is an issue for you. 'Premove' is an option that is available to you as well.

Time is part of the game, and exploiting it is a valid strategy. No cheating there. Allowed.

Technically now: you win either on time, or by checkmate. No other option. In the game, now, I can see you panicked an try to play faster than your opponent, random moves as well.
That is never a good option, unless both of you are really low on time. You should have tried to win the game on the board, set your knight on a dominant position in the board, and try to corner his rook, pushed pawns / try to eat his pawns.

Good luck for next time
People do it cause it works. Valid.
To prevent people from switching to mouserace mode you have to learn to deliver a mate with a Queen up within 1:30.
Once every chess player in the world is capable of delivering mate with a Queen up and 1:30 left on the clock, no one will switch to mouserace mode again when the opponent has 1:30 left and is a Queen up.
So it is your fault people all over the world switch to mouserace mode when they are a Queen down and the opponent has 1:30 left on the clock. We need to get rid of this. So the only solution is you have to learn to mate them dude. So they learn to resign. We trust you to fulfill this task. ;-)
Flagging other people is not silly behavior. I am pretty sure everyone has done it once. If you don't want to get flagged then play with an increment.

In real life otb chess there is no premove option, and people quite often show pretty good sportmanship.

In online chess however, there is this thing called "premove", and some people seem to only care about winning, no matter how bad they play, they just want to use the premove feature to flag their opponent.

That is however not against the rules.

Having said that : I'm in favor of abolishing the premove feature so that people get back to playing real chess and focus at the chess game content, rather than turning every chess game into a crazy bullet speed casino "chess" game.
Just play with increments the next time, dude.
@achja : people can play on time without the premove too. That would not solve the problem
