chess facts

Hello everyone,
I am creating this forum where anyone can write any number of chess facts either in single post or multiple posts. Let's see how many can we all write about chess. Also, please 'number' the facts. This will check how many chess players do know about it. Let's get started:
#1 Chess was originated in India.
#5 First undisputed World Champion was Wilhelm Steinitz.
#6 - Wilhelm Steinitz held his title for 28 years. He was succeeded by Emanuel Lasker, who held the title for 27 years. Truly... Titans of chess ! :]
You all are going great. Thanks for your active participation.
#8 The first chessboard with alternative black and white colours was made in 1090 in Europe.
In medieval chess, the equivalent of the Bishop was called the elephant. Just like the knight it can jump over pieces, but would move 2 squares diagonally.
The abolition of the elephant turned chess into a silly variant. How dare anyone ever change chess?
There are more possible chess moves than atoms in the observable universe.
