Why do people quit when their queen is taken?

S*** I just dropped my Queen to a 2100 player (well blundered) I resigned also I know what was next!
All it takes is to loose two pawns in the opening and your opponent will exchange every piece without gaining anything in the exchange. At the end the player has two pawns vs a lone king. The mate becomes unavoidable.

Now imagine losing 9 pawns. It gives the opponent with the material advantage lots of choices in the way they will end the game. When you're out gunned, and out manned, what do you do? If you have the skill to build a fortress, then go for it.

The pain of loosing a major piece, outweighs the thought of winning the game. A player will need some hope or faith to keep on playing.

I dare say that losing the queen is really a big frustating mistake. There is something to check with the thinking process
the real question should have been
'Why do people not quit when their queen is taken? '
Because there is mat in the next move despite the loss !

That's an idea for another variation of Chess, Capture the Queen.
The whole point is to trap and then capture your opponents Queen and not checkmate the King :)
