@Reaver96 thx man, actually I used to play before my twenties, however 6 or 7 years ago I bought a new guitar because my friends and I started a new band (for fun mostly). I still have the guitar and before I sold the amp I also used to play over backing tracks. Oh man I can't tell you how much I enjoyed playing over some blues backing tracks !! Btw if Gilmour is your inspiration then you are on the right "track" !! (pun intended heh)
In terms of getting better at playing I can't speak for experience, but I've heard the stories of awesome guitarists (friends of friends) and what they have in common is this: 1) they play enjoying the moment, 2) they practiced figuring out by ear song after song after song (increasing the levels of difficulty as their fingers allowed them), 3) not doing too much of those boring finger exercises (which I used to do, and consequently not having fun at all)
