Why are people in lichess so quiet?

During game I do not talk as it is just a distraction.

you are not in the good teams in this case. there is more activity, but better targeted, on many possible subjects. Regarding the discussion during random games, it is undoubtedly because of the game interface which lends itself less to discussion. but go watch the tournaments! it's happy, I bet you've never seen a marathon chat!
I'm quiet because I disabled the chat due to some people abuse it.
I love to talk while game and here too, why you say all is silence?
surely mostly cheaters don't talk( if to ask them of their suspecious game)+ but it's rare , that a Player don't answer , if You ask him something Interesting
there is a chat and even a voice chat in lichess, but most don't use it.
There are a small number of people I follow (who also follow me) and that I chat with during or after the game. I find that adds a lot and enjoy it. But not everyone does. Another option is over-the-board. If you go to a chess club you can have conversations during casual play. That's also very nice way to get to know people.

just give it a try after a few games against someone. Its like fishing. Sometimes people answer and then you've broken the ice. If your respectful and friendly they're likely to chat in later games.
