Looks like 2.Qe2 would look nuts but be interesting against the French. We only have one guy in our OTB club that plays the French and CaroKann. It'll be worth the price of that book to see the look on his face when I hit him with 2.Qe2

I'm running about 75% wins so far with what little I know, using the KIA. Some guy hit me with KID against me, and ran down our castled kings' side and destroyed me. It was a blitz game and he made quick carnage out of me. I didn't know what to do with my 2 Knights that were in the area.

This is indeed looking like an opening I can use for the next 30 years.

I'm getting confused...does one pretty much always fire e4 before storming with his h pawn?

Played the KIA today in our OTB chess club. In honor of Mr. Benko, I played 1.g3 as the first move and got typical KIA setup from there. My worthy and tough to beat Japanese lady played KID against me. I know now the KIA is no fast wham bam thank you mam opening. One must be patient. Pushed the e4 pawn THEN the h3. Finally set up a tactic, pushed a Knight attacking something which opened a hard to see discovered attack on her undefended Queen. Bam, she took the Knight and the rest was history. It was about 30 moves. Loving this KIA!
