Start with a middle pawn. Develop knights and bishops in the centre. Then play and get some experience. Then get a book introducing the game.

Start by playing longer games (10 minutes +) and have a look at your games afterwards. Look for your mistakes and how you could improve. Check out the Lichess analysis page. It is quite powerful and useful. Also do some tactic puzzles on a regular basis and after some time you will improve. ;-)
