How did you guys find your opening?

Out of curiosity.

And also because it's been a month and I still can't decide between 1.d4 Nf3 and 1.d4 d5 as black.
I like to play aggressively, so I based my openings around that.
First I played e4 than I got in those annoying spanish positions I found drawish. so after about 3 years of e4 I switched to d4 but that only lasted 1 season and during that summer i switched back to e4 having the ponziani (the greatest mind fuck when you play it Only lost 6 games with it out of 30) as a great suprise weapon

With black I always played the najdorf sicilian, but last year I switched to taimanov, and won a book about the french in a blitz tournament. And i am also to play that as it can transposition from taimanov

On 1. d4 I have played every system there is: First Queens gambit, than nimzo both for 2 years. And than a period of Benko gambit ben-oni and nimzo depending on my mood during the game, but last year settled with Kings indian (defence)

But aside from that I also played a lot of openings random openings in top tournaments to mess with my opposition. playing 1.c4 and seeing 1...c5 after 15 minute think!
Back in 1985 my Dad said a neighbor wanted to play chess with me and I knew nothing of chess except how the pieces moved. He taught me the Queen's Gambit and to this day I still play it, although not exclusively.
e4 is the basic of chess its the best way to learn the game,
then after this you can move to d4 c4 etc.
I flipped through ECO and played the openings with the least number of pages. This was the Bird's, Alekhine's Defense, and the Stonewall Dutch.
All of these were too closed for me, so I switched to BDG, the Scandinavian, and the Benko Gambit. I've even played 1. h3 and 1. a3 against masters, therefore I played black.
After a decade of inactivity, I played the Exchange Ruy Lopez, the Dragon Sicilian, and the Eungland Gambit.
Now that I am more caught up on theory, I play the Scotch, the Accelerated Dragon, and the Semi-Slav. These are do-or-die openings in which there is lots of tactics and very few long drawn out games.
I've played just about every opening, and these are the most fun. The biggest problem is that since the games are over quickly, there is plenty of time to waste between rounds.
agree with #6. Start with 1.e4 and play the Italian game. It was also my first opening and i learned its theory from a book by Pachman.
With black against 1.d4 it is more difficult. I started with 1...Nf6, Kings Indian, and it is my opening until today after messing around with Queens Gambit and Nimzo Indian for a while. I learned this opening from a book by Geller and have later read other Books by other authors about it. Anyhow, if one can play Kings Indian well, he can play a lot of Openings well.
