No sleeping is not the same, sleeping is about your brain shrinking, and being soaked in cerebral spinal fluid for cleaning of built up detrius.
meditation is not just about having an empty mind - some may take that approach but there are many. Often it is actively observing what rises, and from that gleaning knowledge of your inner workings and outer sensitivities - note how you are bored, does the part of your mind saying 'I'm bored' just say 'i'm bored' a lot? Do you start thinking about your dog, or how you want coffee? Maybe a girl you met the other day? - when you notice these things, and you really truly sit with them, for 20-40 minutes at least, you will find that they begin to fade - and an inner peace and stillness replaces the busy thoughts.. people associate thoughts with intelligence, however it is not thinking that is always intelligence - you will find with a calmer more still mind, that your capacity for honed thought where it matters, is greatly increased.
