How to Calculate in Critical Positions

There are two big problems when it comes to "How to calculate in a critical position."

1) Time is a definite factor here. Not much time to "calculate" anything in a fast game. Just gotta go with your gut.

2) Identifying if it's critical. Certain times there is an insane looking move that will bring you a great advantage. Otherwise the position looks about equal. Spotting when is the right time to sac 2-3 pieces for a mating attack is never easy. Because most of the positions where you can sac a couple of pieces it's not sound.
We both know what lichess has done for the chess world, and it's amazing; therefore, if this lecture was done using lichess' platform, it would have been about 1,000,000 times better.

chesscom is a piece of crap that would be completely ignored by the entire chess world if much of the chess world wasn't generally naive, complacent, oblivious, myopic, and knew what was best for itself.

Other than that, it was a great video.
Thanks for sharing.
We hope to see many more (done on lichess preferably).

Keep up the good work!
@Onyx_Chess If you have beef with chess.com please limit you crusade to topics related to it. One borad editor is very much like a another so makes absolutely no difference

@BlakeyBChess nice to see that even better players miss obvious things sometimes like weak backrank. I just do it all the time. On those queen candidate move somehow I allways started with Nxe4. Dunno why but looked most natural way to take back the pawn? What missed on bishop retreat was the weak b2 making the line playable. I guess this also good example on why fast development matters
@Onyx_Chess hahahahaa... !Quietly leaves!

I do agree with you on the chesscom thing, it is completely pathetic and the cheaters are unbearable, my rating on that site is like 800 bullet...and i never play there anymore..
Thank you, this is a great help how to think. It is probably not much use for the fast online games, but as a player who does a couple of OTB games over the year I appreciate this very much. Of course @lurarose is right - it is still not easy to decide when a position is "critical" and the investment in deeper calculation is worthwhile.
It also helps very much that you pointed out how you took the wrong decision at one point. There are so many videos out there where the authors always make it seem so easy - as though only the greatest fool could miss the good moves; sometimes you almost wonder how the loser of the game could ever have made some decent progress in chess at all because all his moves were bad and all the winner's moves were great.

Thanks, I will try to remember you in my next OTB game on Sunday!
OnyxChess, question, when you show off with your Patron wing here, do you think that makes me want to donate?

Regarding the topic in the video:

I choosed Qb6 as candidate move because i thought i would have the Zwischenzug Qxb2, i miscalculated the following lines. Why is that? I guess because i have never played Caro Kann with black.

Which leads to an addon to this video: The more motifs you know, the deeper and more precise you can calculate. Therefore knowing many different motifs is a good thing in chess. Therefore a good idea (which i should follow myself more often) is to play as much as possible different openings in free games, and try to analyze with or without opponent.

I have made the observation in internet chess that this means analyzing alone. Which leads to the further addon: I suggest to play real world games, join real world clubs and make real world chess friends. They cant just close the window after the game and the possibility is high to analyse a bit after the game, which is more fun. And more efficient! That because you have to put your thoughts into sentences in order to communicate with your opp. This will automatically lead to you memorizing these analysis results better.

Another side effect is that some real world people happen to be nice friends :)
@Kartext

Stop blaming your delinquency on others.
I rebuke at least a handful of people at this site, it doesn't stop me from helping out.

Lichess is still one of the best examples on planet earth.
