@pawnedge - I don't want to do Nezhmetdinov down, I just don't think that in absolute terms there's anything in his record that you can compare to (say) Fischer's absolute dominance of the qualifiers and world championship match in 1970-72, or Carlsen's 125 game unbeaten run, or Lasker's multi-decade reign as World Champion.
@kertandidi To be honest I have heard of many wonder kids, tough to pick. Sarin maybe, but PS5 and X-box could be the end of any of them. However I am certain a future scourge of AI chess engines will emerge.

Fair enough. As someone else said, comparisons across generations are fraught with complications; and as I was saying, attacking is different from defending. (It means taking more risks, which sometimes don’t pay off; but when they do, the resulting game is generally more exciting, IMHO.) And if we brought time into the equation too, we’d have to qualify our prospective candidates in terms of who was the best bullet player, or what have you. And no doubt that’s a largely different skill set from being the best at classical chess. And since few people are great at both, this would considerably narrow the list. . . .
You seem to be advocating for the best-all-around position, which is understandable. Anyway, I guess who “the greatest” is really depends on how you define greatness. 😅 And I suppose, at the end of the day, it’s necessarily somewhat subjective, since people all have different reasons for selecting their favorite players.

When we say "Greatest of all time" It means he never changed his ability to play/perform at his best.. weather it was yesterday, today and in the future. Only God can do that , so He is the Greatest chess player of all time. No one comes close to Him. Even Stock fish and Alpha zero would look like a noob compares to God's chess playing skills/ strength.
