Chess fitness

How do you think, when we play chess how many calories do we lose. Comparing to running or lifting weights. I mean when you run 3 kilometers, you will lose about 200 kilocalories, which is equivalent to a cookie. And when you play chess for hours you definitely feel tired too. And by the way, most of top chess players are slim.
How would someone measure that? Hook up electrodes? Hook up a tube to see how much oxygen one breathes? Have an infrared camera to see body heat?

It's an incredibly sophisticated process to measure the rate of energy burning in a human body, which would be impossible to measure 50 years ago. How would someone construct equipments that could be measure such things. How would one know what to measure? Oxygen consumption? Heart rate? Body heat? And how would you even measure that?
The only thing that burns calories is physical work. You can do all the office work/brainwork you want (but you're still gonna blimp out if you don't exercise).

I guess most of them are in good physical conditions, cause they believe, they have to stay "fit" somehow, to be in the best conditions for a tournament / longer games / etc.
Also physical training is some kind of a counterweight to their daily work, e.g. Magnus likes to play soccer.
#4 I say GMs consume lots of calories during tournament play. As for lichess players including Clàssical players, the calories burn is less than strolling in parks and malls. Even Online Bullet players don't burn much. Online players have no excuse to skip jogging or workout.

Thanx for the article. So Karuana loses 15 pounds during tournament. Damn.
And I’ve measured my weight too. I’ve lost almost 1 kilo after hard evening play here on lichess, believe it or not.
