Holding

I often hear phrases like "White has a significant advantage, but Black is holding" or "Black is up the exchange, yet White is holding" and so on. What does it mean to be in a "holding" position to you? Is it close to resignable but not quite? Is it a position where you could squeeze out a win? Is it double-edged? I would like to hear your thoughts.
Holding means that you can hold the position to a draw.

for example: When someone says "black is up the exchange but white can hold this" (maybe because of a special type of pawn structure or king position), it means that if white plays correctly it is a draw. Black doesnt have a way too break through.
