Stories with a Chess Theme

Irving Chernev's "The Chess Companion" contains 13 thoroughly entertaining short stories relating to a chess theme.

Other suggestions ?
I have just begun to re-read:
"The Eight" by Katherine Neville
I remember from a dozen years ago this novel to be fascinating.
A Masterpiece perhaps.
Has an equal chess themed novel been written?
The Defense (or The Luzhin Defense) by Vladimir Nabokov.

"A chilling story of obsession and madness. Luzhin, a distracted, withdrawn boy, takes up chess as a refuge from everyday life. As he rises to grandmaster, the game of chess gradually supplants the world of reality as he moves inexorably towards madness."
Another book by Irving Chernev and Fred Reinfeld related to your search, is called "The Fireside Book of Chess" I don't know if its available in algebraic notation...my copy is in descriptive. One more good book in this category is "The Treasury of Chess Lore " by Fred Reinfeld. Both are good reads for chess stories, games quizzes and chess anecdotes . Also to #3... Did you know that "The Luzin Defense"was made into a movie? I found one more book called "The Adventure of Chess" by Edward Lasker...Emanuel's cousin. :]
Nah I didn't know about the movie. I just checked it out on imdb, pretty funny that John Turturro is the main role.. I might put it on the 'watch with no expectations' list.

Pawn Sacrifice is also on that list.. I just don't know if I can bring myself to watch it just yet though.
There is a book called 'The Queen's Gambit' by Walter Tevis which has been really well received on goodreads. I will most likely chuck it on my pile of reading when I get a chance.
I haven't seen Pawn Sacrifice...Been waiting for it to come on cable?! I'm curious..about why the reluctance to watch it? I have only heard of it ...don't know what its about. Please enlighten me :] Thanks for the Pawn Sacrifice comment...I find that I can watch it for free on amazon prime...looking forward to seeing it, as a long time Fischer fan
It's the story of the Fischer-Spassky 1972 WCC. Reluctant because it's Toby Maguire as Fischer and Toby Maguire is a goober.
I see what you mean...can you believe he also was spider man
