Time control is not about YOUR personal preferences, you might wanna define who is that everyone you are talking about here... Needless to say, YOU personally are not forced to participate in that event.

I have heard from several players that they are happy and relieved to finally have increments in the marathon, to be able to play some quality chess without having to worry about getting (dirty) flagged against those who maintain their insanely high rating just by speed alone.

If increments are that terrible, then there is a very simple way to get rid of them in arena tournaments. :D

Maybe please check lichess.org/tournament/history/marathon and let me explain.
We had 4x a time control without increment.
We had 2x bullet time control.
So, now having blitz and increments is pretty logical, isnt it?
We are trying to reach different target groups - to give them a fair chance to play at the pace they enjoy the most.

Myself, I have not decided whether I am going to play it or not. Playing 3+2 "normally" is out of question and taking 100% berserk in 2+1 ripped me for like a week but I am sure if I do not play, I will really enjoy watching it!

Happy chessing and all best! :)
+2 is hardly much increment in tactically charged positions. These still feel like playing bullet if both players are at like 10 sec
I personally think that is good to have different time controls, maybe except for Hyper and Ultra because of the natute of the tournament, just too long for those formats.

If Im right the Marathons have been just blitz and bullet until today.

If were my desition I would even consider a rapid rhythm like 10/0.
If you do 10+0 the top players will make it like blitz anyway.

It's true, you're penalized if your games take too long.

Right!
Official arena history goes back to Autumn 2018; honestly I do not know why it does not include following events that I am linking below.

lichess.org/tournament/summer18
lichess.org/tournament/spring18
lichess.org/tournament/winter17
lichess.org/tournament/autumn17
lichess.org/tournament/summer17
lichess.org/tournament/spring17
lichess.org/tournament/winter16
lichess.org/tournament/autumn16
lichess.org/tournament/summer16
lichess.org/tournament/spring16
lichess.org/tournament/winter15
lichess.org/tournament/autumn15
lichess.org/tournament/summer15

So, if you care you can click through those, there are lots of 3+2 blitz one of them was even 5+3!

Sadly, rapid is not suited for (long) arena tournament format.
This time control will just turn the whole marathon into a 5+0 event without the option to berserk, especially at the competitive higher end. It is a fact that if you want to succeed, you HAVE TO disrespect the time control...

Let me respectfully disagree or even say that you have no clue what you are talking about!
First of all, experienced incremental players know how to manage their time; then, those "tactically charged positions" are not occurring each game. That +2 becomes useful in the endgame when they suddenly are able to finish you off with no time on the clock. That makes incremental players strong in that part of the game cause we, the ones who choose to play without, never get to actually practice endings as we have reduced that game phase into a flag fight.
I said that with the impression of this game.

We had no idea what we were doing, even less did I, and of course when I lost my queen it was time to resign
Yes @Funkmaus , I thought the same, why in the historical is just from middle 2018?!

So, it is intersting that Lichess has run 33 Marathons so far and 25 of them have been blitz and just 8 of them bullet.

But it is important to consider that the first 19 (!!!) Marathons were blitz, so I guess at some point the people in charge decided to included bullet in the format.

So since the bullet began to be part of the marathons (Spring 2020) it have been 14 marathons, 8 of the bullet, now basically seem to be even which I think is good!

Now we are heading to the 3/2, a very intersting format for those who are not crazy for flagging!

The last time a Marathon was played with that format was autumn 2021!

:)
Some people tried to flag me even when checkmate was easier. Well, they got a deserved stalemate in some cases.
@Aluminium-27

At some point the bullet game could consist in just the clock more than the positipn itself (it should not be btw)

So, it is very likely that your opponent did even notice during the game that they were winning because they have the flag in their minds!

:)
