Puzzle Analysis

After 1.Bxf7, black would then choose from 1...Kd8 and 1...Kf8.

I think we can safely eliminate 1...Kd8 2.Ne6# :)

1...Kf8 is more interesting, but after 2. Bc1, black actually has no way to move the queen to safety without giving up mate.

Two of the recurring mate patterns show up after the straightforward attempt 2...Qxa1, moving the queen to safety and snagging a rook.

So, to refresh, the position is after 1.Bxf7+ Kf8 2.Bc1 Qxa1.

Now white mates by force.

3. Bh5+, and now

3...Kg8 4. Qb3+ and black is mated after throwing some pieces on d5 and e6 to delay the mate.

Alternatively, if we assume b3 is covered (instead of 2..Qxa1, maybe black played 2...Qb6), then there's a second mate after 3...Kg8 with 4.Rf8+ Kxf8 5. Qf1+ Nf5 6.Qxf5+ and mate follows either on f7 or with Bg5+ if the king runs to e7.

If after 3.Bh5+ black chooses to interpose the knight immediately with 3...Nh5, then after 4.Rxf5+, we find ourselves in similar territory.

4...Kg8 would then be met by either Qb3+ or Rf8+ with mates we've already seen, while 4...Ke7 is met by 5.Bg5#

So, black just can't avoid giving up the queen. After 1.Bxf7+ Kf8 2.Bc1, black's best is to play Nxd4, which at least avoids immediate mate, but that's a miserable way to lose.

Hopefully that helps!
