Absolutely, but that actually proves my point further. If you were to do a coinflip you wouldn't take it. Losing 10$ is worse than getting 10$. However chess is a game of strategy. I understand why people would be more willing to take this bet because it is now a game of skill. However ratings are setup to make you win and lose 50% of the time. Any difference on this would cause an increase or decrease on rating which would return to a 50% chance of winning. Additionally, if you lose you can no longer blame it on luck. It was your fault you lost, not the chance of a coin. I would be more willing to take the chess bet because I am in control, but on average I still only have a 50% chance of winning. The stakes are also higher because a loss hits my self-esteem as well.
"Losing feels worse than winning feels good."

That was the way Casey Stengel, former Yankees manager, put it. He had a way with words.
Im gonna bring here puzzles too. When mi gallant piece is brought back to his place and asked to "try somethinģ different" I feel like i have been stabbed to death and I curse liké a madman. Lol im angry only for remembering...
Losing counts double.

Less say you have 0/0 in an event. And the event is only one game. And your opponent wins that game, but you lose. So you are on -1.... but actually 2 points behind the leader.

You only lost 1 game but you are -2 behind if you had won.

But if you win it only feels like 1 win.

But jokes aside I would say it's a complex sociological phenomenon.

Put quite simply no one likes to lose.

lol me too.
it sucks that we put our self-esteem on the line all the time.
That again says that we value our losses at a higher value than our wins.
I doubt I would feel like I was such a smart person for taking that bet and winning but I would feel like a dumb person for taking that bet and losing.
