@bufferundurrun quite a stretch to say the word dumb is nasty. Especially since such a word can even be translated into rounded, blunt-edged, or dull; really, the word is the opposite of nasty and makes it appear lichess mods as overtly paranoid about communication in general. It is really offensive to be threatened with a ban for using the word dumb.
Lichess could eliminate text-chat altogether and add maybe 5 or 10 sign-language buttons to send nobody can feel anything

lichess is a free / opensource project the minds behind the project are in a postmodern or relativistic-pluralist viber. Or put it another way, people from the green meme (Glaves / Cowan / Beck - Spiral Dynamics theory).
These people have well defined behaviors and group movements that represent this mentality could be greepeace, WHO, UN, UNICEF, Humanistic psychology, etc ...
But chess attracts, more than thinkers, sportsmen. Sportsmen are more likely to be from the orange meme and bring with them capitalist behaviors, law of the fittest, etc.
