Reduce Cheating Behaviour

Not, that I feel that there are a lot cheaters on this website. The others keep writing it and up till now I got refunded 3 times only. Only once I felt being cheated in the past years of lichess. But there are more concerned people and this is directed to their purposes.

And also not, that I think that I would cheat or want to promote cheating by writing this topic. Still. I have a strange thought what might turn out to be a very good idea and I also want to share it with you. Could also be total rubbish. Not sure if it helps. I write. You judge.

What I want to propose is actually a cheating function. The feature would work like a live computer analysis. Their own computer evaluates the x best moves in each situation in a live game. (This can be done analysing some fixed depth or time) and the player can choose among those moves and make it. Like a professional cheating program.

The players will then be labled as it was up til now. "Uses a machine" or something and prevent people with the function enabled to participate in turnaments. They moreover get their own turnaments where everyone can join, even those who dont have activated the function. One could call that "machine turnament"

Lets come to the possible advantages. And I will edit this post and add further advantages and disadvantages by you.

1.) There is a number >0 of persons who would use this feature instead of cheating undetected. People who think that they just cheat because they want a live analysis of their games to improve learning. Also if I dont think that this would work particualarly well there are some people thinking that (at least I know of some) These people would not be in turnaments anymore. -> This in fact would reduce the cheating behaviour in normal turnaments.

2.) Machine turnaments could actually turn out to be interesting for some cheater and for non-cheaters. People who feel that they dont have chances now can win when they use the right engine parameters. Also Non cheaters could brag on how far they got without using machines in this machine turnament. Nakamura already does this by playing the best machines and actually beating them some times.

3.) It would take out the wind for the trolls. "XY is a cheater" would not necessarily be an insult anymore and I could bet that less annoying stuff like that would appear in turnament chats.

possible disadvantages:
1.) Of course it might happen that this turns out to actually promote further cheating behaviour or damage the image of this site. But like in 2.) and 3.) in the advantages section I dont know if that is true

Further disadvantages? Your thoughts?
People aren't cheating just because they find it fun to play while using a computer, they are cheating because they want an unfair advantage. If their opponent is also using a computer, then this is no longer an unfair advantage and the player loses the incentive to do it. Nobody wants to win a tournament marked as one for cheaters (though I realise you're suggesting not viewing it as cheating, per se); they'd rather win the one marked as not for cheaters, and if they cheat to win it then just hope they don't get caught.

I can't imagine anybody would opt to play in your suggested tournament *instead of* cheating in the standard tournament. Maybe people would play in both though.
This has already been tried. They called it yahoo chess ;-).
^ Does yahoo chess still exist?

I remember playing there 17 years ago.
We already offer a safe space for cheaters to cheat. It's called casual games once they've been marked.
I can not edit your points into my first post anymore but I support all your thoughts on that.

Snuffington, of course you got a point but you also got me wrong. In my post point 1.) I clearly outruled the cheaters who just want an unfair advantage. Of course for those who just want this, this feature wouldn't make sense. I suppose (and know) not all are like that. Are other people except me thinking, that there are not just unfair cheaters?

MrLegilimens, thanks for the info, I didn't know about that. I thought they would not be able to play games anymore then. But still they would have to get marked first and we had to rely on the cheat detection system completely. My proposal would also allow for less severe "temporal selfreports" of some guys who are being more honestly to themselves and to others.

@legend I don't think so, but I haven't checked -- my yahoo mail began to unexplainably send spam 5 years ago and that was the end of my yahoo experience :-). I remember it quite clearly, the java applet, "hippopotamus cavern" etc. good times :-).
"Nakamura already does this by playing the best machines and actually beating them some times". Can you show me this?

I highly doubt that any human now has a chance to win any top10 engines (running even on the phone).
If Naka beat a top machine it would be HUGE news. He played stockfish with a handicap a few times and didn't do too well. He drew a couple of times, with various assistance.

Based on ELO scores Carlsen should win 1 in 100 games with a top engine, though I'd have to see it to believe it.
Probably a few draws. Winning? Never, no way.

They constantly lose games starting with more moves and more material - how much can one be humiliated?
