Acid Ape is compatible with multiple e-board brands and chess websites. Lichess is FOSS and makes their API available to everyone. I can't fault either. To me, DGT is the is least flexible and least willing make their product available on multiple platforms. No official linux, OS X, or iOS apps with an official app that look straight out of Windows XP.

It does confirm that I remember it correctly. They do allow this one app that you have to pay hoards of money for to use the protected api's but no other. Only it. Thibalts reason that they were doing it before the restrictions went in place seems weak to me. If it's no big deal to tell people who want to play with real pieces they have to use a bot account then why can't they tell asid ape you can use a bot account too? Also, why couldn't they at least let people who want to dgt board to play casual anonymous games? I paid my $100 Aus and got the acid ape DGT app.
Bottom line- it works super well, exactly as promised. The only downside is the price. Sad that Lichess doesn't want to support this with an in house plug-in.
The cheating concern is rubbish. I'll explain my views:
#1 It is unlikely that someone who enjoys chess enough to own a DGT board is interested in cheating.
#2 If people cheat consistently, they will soon get a very high ranking and they won't be playing schmucks like me.
#3 Chess is a game of perfect information- if I play a centaur with the abilities of a human grandmaster every now and then, who cares? I'll probably learn a lot. You play against the move in front of you, whether it's made by alphazero, magnus carlsen or my 7 year old daughter. The opportunity to play your best move is exactly the same.
#4 Multiple other websites allow/support eboards- PlayChess, FICS and ICC are the obvious. I see no evidence that cheating is more prevalent there.
#5 The stakes are so low that probably only the occasional kid is going to cheat. It's bad for your chess (engine on, brain off), there can't be any pleasure in it. I see no evidence that it is a systemic problem. I've probably played a handful of cheaters over the years, and it doesn't bother me at all.
#6 Even if it were a real problem, it is letting the worst element spoil the experience of the rest to make decisions based on the behaviour of a few cheats.

@Mrpo Congratulations on your purchase. I hope it gives you lots of enjoyment. Although we all know there are cheaters on Lichess I agree with many of your points.
I would add to them that if someone wants to cheat and be hard to be detected they don't need to abuse a DGT board for that. With longer time controls it's easy to use a device that's not connected to the computer to cheat with and already Lichess doesn't have any of the tab usage, mouse pointer, or running process clues etc that are built into their webpage software. So what's the difference? Really, can someone answer that?
If someone is willing to put that much effort into it it would be a lot EASIER for them to use the unconnected smart phone method. and doing it that way would be just as effective. What is this imaginary threat Thibault would have us believe that droves of depraved people will rush in to use a method to cheat that's a lot harder, more complicated, and costlier than the ones that are already out there. It makes literally NO SENSE!
There is no logical explanation why Lichess hell bent on depriving its users of a beautiful chess playing experience when doing so accomplishes exactly nothing. I just wish Thibault would come out of his ivory tower for a minute to talk to us about this. It seems he lives there now though, unlike how it was in the old days.
I guess the logic goes something like this. It's wrong to cheat on Lichess. Very wrong. ........................ Unless you're using acid ape.
