It doesnt necessarily have to be nefarious.
A lot, or at least some, people who would use engines / progs on Anon are doing it because:
A) They wrote a computer chess script via C++ or some other programming language and want to see how it matches up against a real person. (A lot of programming courses will have students write a chess program; its very very common. I had to do one in high school for basic or one of the classes I took)
B) They want to run a engine while playing their usual move sets so they can figure out play by play where their moves go wrong

you need to know yourself. this is obvious you will not play your best chess in the middle of the night or when you are ill or have daily life problems. experimented players learn to ignore such things but they don't always succeed neither.
also, even in your best condition, there is just positions where you are not inspired and play badly, some days bring more of such positions than others, that's all.
