I have got a question for you: Who is winning in this position?
Look here:

lol engine is so stupid
black cant do anything with his pawns and queens, so black is dead.
white wins ez
White is better here cuz the extra pawns and the extra queens are useless and the white pieces don't have to capture the extra black pieces.
It seems totally reasonable that a computer program designed to evaluate actual chess games might struggle with an entirely impossible position.
Though it also reminds me how in AlphaZero versus Stockfish matches the latter ended up with knights on the rim.
A recently posted realistic postion, where stockfish also seems to fail to find the correct move:
lichess.org/analysis/standard/2b1k3/1p1P1ppp/8/8/8/5q2/r7/4K3_b_-_lichess.org/forum/general-chess-discussion/neat-puzzle-from-redditIt seems that black should be able to win, but it appears it's not the case and even stockfish fails to notice that and tries to win instead of chosing the stalemate.
In both positions the 1st & 2nd rank are simply to be ignored by both sides. As long as white takes none of the pawns they are harmless.
In the 1st position white wins easily with 8 extra pawns.
In the 2nd position that is like a starting position, but not quite & there are a number of complexities to take into account.
1) Black pawns all may move 2 squares on 1st move.
2) Black may NEVER promote a pawn.
3) White has first move.
4) White pawns may only move 1 square and not go forward twice
5) White may promote pawns, black may not.
6) Black can castle either way
7) The board is basically a 6x8 board
So black has some advantages, but white does too. It could go either way.
