I know many people in the scene who have dedicated their lives totally to chess and have played chess excessively. Although, of course, due to this one-dimensionality, many of them are already somewhat special, I would still like to claim that they are psychologically "normal" - I don’t know anyone who has mental problems.

Unwanted overthinking and analysis of negative situations in very deep depth lol that it what we do in chess xD

chess doesnt cause mental health problems,people with mental health problems play chess.(im talking abaut people who play a lot of chess everyday).There is a nice proverb,Being able to play chess is a sign of being a gentleman,playing very good chess is a sign of a wasted life.
I don't have problems with that.
but me also :
- howls like a wolf after every points record in the Bundesliga
- bit my phone to celebrate a marathon trophy (I thought I had broken a tooth, but when I spat it out I saw that it was a piece of the camera that I had accidentally broken)
- I celebrate like Gyokeres every time I score an important point in team battle.
- laughs and smiles after a losing streak
- think about getting my three marathon trophies tattooed
but me also :

It's a Paul Morphy quote. I don't agree with it. Not just related to chess, I don't think you have wasted anything if you enjoyed doing it.

I think Paul is trying to say..when there are so many interesting things in life,you spent a very big amaunt of your time playing chess.Chess is afterall a board game.And when paul is talking abaut a very good player,he means someone close to his level.Hikaru said once that people who are 2600+ rating do almost nothing but think abaut chess

I don't know about mental illness, but the fact that hemorrhoids may appear is for sure
