Real authority was never based in papal declarations, even in Medieval times when we still lent some credit to the Pope, which is not the case any more for most of us. Authority is and has always been based on a combination of domination and service. The one who dominates "takes charge" as the English language says, i.e. he takes the load and responsibility of the order on his shoulders and thereby serves. The ones dominated inhabit this order to their own benefit, which makes them willing to contribute and follow the rules, and that is how the order and relationship are sustained, while the occasional rebellious outbursts are dealt with through force. When the dominant entity's service stops performing his role or is simply not needed anymore, as was the case in the 18th century, he is terminated and should be. In our case, a secular, republican and impersonal state replaced king and aristocracy in its domination and service role -- which was nothing new and was already found in Ancient Greece.
We may regret some qualities of the historical aristocratic ruling class. But having stopped being useful, its virtues were only a shadow of what they had been, ever closer to a pose. What creates the great virtues is the harshness of times. When the times become harsh, a superior class with superior virtues arises, establishes order, which leads to peace and prosperity, then looseness again and harsh times again, in cycles.
In France, the Yellow Vests movement's deeper meaning is precisely that the people denounce the dominating entity (the present republican state) as not performing its order-inducing and protective function anymore. No-one wants to be dominated by someone who is not serving them, the two needs to go together (or none of them according to the anarchists, but this is not anthropologically sound). The exact same thing happened in the USA and led to the election of Trump, as he reconnected with the people and promised to serve and protect them.
This is fine. If I was an American I would hope he is re-elected again. As far as I know (admittedly I don't follow US politics very closely) he is doing a good job, and delivering on his promises.
