using long words/sentences doesn't make you sound smart

"The dog..........and when I tell you what colour it is I was both happy and sad at the same time, and you will be too once you hear my story..........it is brown" blablabla. Now listen I have nothing against people who use long words/sentences in order to emphasize or better explain something. But using weird long and or overly complicated words/sentences because you think it makes you sound smarter I think is completely useless. "Earlier today I drank my cup of brown thing that makes adults feel like they are alive and not dead yet". "I am going to use my extremely convenient and complicated iPhonex15+aqx900new in an attempt to find the answer to the question of does 2+2 equal 5 or does 2+2 equal 3?" Yeah, obviously those examples are very exaggerated you don't need to tell me that. But sometimes they aren't even that much exaggerated. When you read an article you expect that it's going to be the amount of length that WORKS for it. you expect that it's going to state something then back it up with evidence and or an anecdotal statement. You expect that it's going to be worded in a smooth and understandable way. And you expect that it's not(actually at this point most people probably know how articles are these days and have given up hope) going to use unnecessarily long words or sentences in order to fill out time and make you waste more of your life reading it. long and complicated words/sentences might seem attractive to you and if that's the case then go for it I'm not stopping you. But just remember that it's going to severely damage the quality of your writing if it's unnecessary. Do you agree or do you think that using long and complicated words/sentences does make people sound smart?
Having a good vocabulary at your disposable allows you to make subtle distinctions and clarify your point in order to avoid ambiguity.
I think writing cohesive thoughts in easily digestible paragraphs goes a long way to making someone seem smart.
I understand what you mean and agree with what you said. Those statements in your examples need serious pruning and reformatting.

But using an extremely long paragraph to explain why extremely long sentences don't make you sound smart, sounds a little ironic, right? Perhaps you could put some work into your own writing before criticizing others. :)
@Repiked. "Now listen I have nothing against people who use long words/sentences in order to emphasize or better explain something" I think I did that or at least I tried
@shadow1414 Yeah, but you probably shouldn't leave yourself exposed to those types of counterarguments. Especially the type of arguments that make you seem contradicting. Would be better to be more clear and concise like those examples you posted. At least the Lichess environment is pretty forgiving, you would be having a harder time if some person came along and launches an ad-hominem attack at you. Be careful out there!
Proof that, at some point or other, you sat through a Critical Thinking class.
