Gogol novel, Dead Souls

I started reading this in a public domain pdf yesterday. I was recommended Gogol in the Off Topic a few weeks ago, its starting very well. The narrator uses dry humor, the novel is in the classic realism style.
Liked the loose and vigorous style; the subject matter, not so much (the same problem I often have with Dostoyevsky).
My attempt at Anna Karenina so far, is a bust. I was very turned off by the casual (it seems) attitude about adultery.
My favorite work by Gogol was Taras Bulba. Shorter, with a much more engaging plot. “The Nose” is also worth a read for its novelty, even though I preferred Gautier’s “the Mummy’s Foot” in terms of classic literature about sentient body part hijinks.
