Please end the Themed Tournaments

I agree with what others have commented, but I just want to add that you must feel incredibly entitled to suggest that thematic tournaments should be banned just because you, one out of hundreds of thousands of players on this site, does not like playing them. The fact is, there are probably still about 8 or 10 normal tournaments for every themed one, and you can also play in the lobby.

Dear Sam,

Although you decided to adopt an insulting and supercilious tone, I will refrain from responding in the same way. Please re-read my original post: I did NOT suggest "banning" thematic tournaments, but rather that they be put into a separate stream (much as chess variant tournaments are). Atomic, 3-check, crazyhouse, horde, etc., don't intermix with the "conventional" mainline tournaments, but for some reason, "theme" tournaments do.

I don't know why in this Internet age, people insist on (1) misrepresenting what others say, and then (2) speak in a way no one would ever dare in a live interaction. Anonymity and distance seems to bring out the very worst in people. :(

Why would thematic tournaments ever bother you? Looking right now at the tournaments page I can see 7 official standard tournaments, only one of which is a thematic tournament. So it's not like you can't find any other tournament to play in. So what you said about thematic tournaments, that "they force players to play openings we often dislike or don't play" is just nonsense, no offence.

Also I find the current organization of the tournaments to be just fine. Standard tournaments are on one side, variant tournaments are on the other, and thematic tournaments are more than easy to spot because they have the opening in their name.

Sorry, everyone thinks differently.
Let me explain, I will attempt to rephrase what #1 has written, to further understanding, I am not arguing for or against it.
It is currently 01:05 in my time zone.
At 22:00 started a 1 hour and 57 minute long official 10+0 arena, which ended at 23:57, each game having started from the initial position.
At 00:00 stared a King's Gambit Accepted arena of the same time control and length, scheduled to end at 01:57, there is no official 1 hour and 57 minute long 10+0 arena from the initial position going on at the moment.
More 1 hour and 57 minute long 10+0 arenas from the initial position are already visible, scheduled at 02:00, 04:00, and 06:00.
What #1 wants, is for the thematic tournaments to be held in addition to the regular tournaments, and not instead of them.
In other words, #1 would want a regular 1 hour and 57 minute long 10+0 arena starting every two hours, regardless of whether there is a thematic tournament scheduled. Thus, what is bothering #1 is not the thematic tournaments themselves, but the lack of concurrent regular tournaments.
This , of course, can be extended to all the other tournaments as well.
Im sorry cheapthought about the tone of my comment, I was being completely honest. I admit that I did not quite understand what you meant with your second paragraph regarding a separate series, and I was misled by the title. I apologize for my wording, it certainly was condescending and quite frankly disgusting, but I think my point still stands. Please explain though how you would create a different series of themed tournaments, as your concern seems more reasonable due to clarification of later posts. One last thing, I do not write like this because of anonymity, but out of honesty, though my thoughts at the time were certainly not correct, and I regret it.
Greetings, sam
Thank you to all for the polite and friendly tone of the latest posts. I admit that "please end thematic tournaments" makes it sound like I mean "please make sure there are never any thematic tournaments on lichess". But the title box in forum posts is somewhat limited, but what I meant (and what I tried to explain in my original post) was "please end thematic tournaments in the mainline tournament list and place them into a special category like other variants".

Perhaps a better title would have been "please move thematic tournaments" though I'm not sure that's very clear.

In any case, to me a "thematic" tournament means "stop playing chess for now." It's the same thing for "elite tournaments" that require a 2200+ rating... those too are inline with the "normal" tournaments on lichess.
@cheapthought

What about what you said in that themed tournament's chat? You didn't say "Themed tournaments should be moved!" or something like that, you said "end these theme tourneys!"

You're just trying to amend your statements because you saw people are totally against your initial statement, now you're trying to say that all along you actually wanted themed tournaments to just be moved, but I'm not falling for that.

Also, if you want a tournament to play in when one of those themed tournaments is there, you can just make one yourself you know?

I don't play thematic tournaments either but that doesn't mean I'm against them in any way. It's just as I don't like Chess960 but I don't ask Lichess to remove it. Personally I've never noticed a lack of tournaments, if I can't find one time control then there will be plenty of tournaments of other time controls.

I said very clearly in my original post what I was suggesting. I'm very sorry that you had to ACTUALLY READ the post to understand this, instead of just reading the title and concluding what I wanted "all along."

You say "now you're trying to amend your statements." How does pointing you to the FIRST post equate to "amending" my statements? I'm pretty sure you're a troll, so I'm going to just move on...
