But did you ever consider to ask your opponents if they are ok with the fact that you won't have n minutes time to play but randomly less? (A sort of "random berserk" mode. Maybe Lichess very much creative programmers would like to implement that for cases like yours). And that you can disappear for good at any time during the game? One could be not comfortable with that. That's what I mean when I talk about "altering the time control". Sorry, but I can't consider that as a fair behaviour.

Exactly. But that affects all players to compensate a systemic problem. Not the same thing as allowing people to play only bits and pieces of a game then disappear.

Here below, it's the content of my message box. 167 Leavers, not all those I stumbled upon, only the minority I took the time to write to, during the period when I still tried to "educate" them the way Lichess does not. I specifically remember in all my Lichess life only 2 of them stayed green till the end. So, 1 out of 100 is a fairly realistic percentage. They are an insignificant minority. Surely they can't be an excuse for Lichess to leave hundreds of leavers free to annoy fair players.

No, it's not. The message is posted in the chat box, at the end of the game, when the leaver already left for good. It should be delivered to the leaver's *message box*. That's the only place where there is a chance he might see it.

You will ever be able to do it anyway, a program can't stop a CPU from multitasking. But think of how would that be considered in real life chess, if you went away for minutes. You sit at the board and see your opponent leaving to performe any number of different tasks of his own. 30 seconds is more than a fair time allowance to do that.

#11 Ironically KontraChess has a working idea: a "doubling cube" alien to chess (and would mess up the rating system; you'd need to have some other free reward for a gamble). Chess lacks a rule to challenge an opponent to decide whether to continue playing.

@Mark_Iorio There's no real point in comparing online chess to OTB though, is there? I wouldn't be listening to music at all if I was playing OTB, nor would I be playing whilst eating a big bag of crisps or in my bed or wherever I might be. And players do get up from the board in OTB games anyway.

There should be an option to only get matched with players with a game completion rate above a certain number. You are already matched against players of similar rating by the server. Being matched with players based on completion rate should be an easy option to implement and it would certainly improve the community on Lichess.

I usually check abandoning players profiles while I’m waiting and a lot of them have game completion rates below 60-70%. Many of them have hundreds of games played so clearly the moderators are not banning these players (I always report them for trolling, have never gotten an answer from a moderator). Matching players on completion rate solves this problem. No moderators needed. Players with low completion rate (Trolls who abandon games) can play each other and stop ruining the experience for the rest of us.

It's about banning repeated offenders -- not folks who, say, play on the train and occasionally lose their connection. Perhaps if you leave a gain 3 times in a row, you should have to solve a bunch of chess puzzles (like the capcha needed to post in this list).
