losing games on purpose?

hey, look at this game i just played:

my opponent got a warning "losing games on purpose will result in a ban"

this concerns me. how does lichess know what is "on purpose" or not?

oftentimes in 960, players aren't used to the setup and they don't see what the consequences of their moves are until it's too late.

it's very likely that my opponent made a blunder on move 2 and therefore he resigned. this is hardly "losing on purpose".
again, i'm sure this guy didn't see it because 960 is like that if you're not used to it. but he got a warning "Warning, l-hazarus. Losing games on purpose will result in a ban."

i think the warning is misplaced, at least for 960.
Well maybe the guy shouldn't resign in 2 moves. That's ridiculous.
I wouldn't want to play any longer after blundering a piece in the first 2 moves either.

How many more moves should he make before resigning?
If you continuously blunder pieces on move 1, you'll eventually get weak enough opponents that resigning at that point would be nonsensical.
I wouldn't want Lichess to ban people just because of blunders. On the other hand, perhaps everybody in my playing strength range (at this time ~2050, in other words: mediocre) has experienced this: you are paired against someone with ~1300, lose 5 games in a row without even the slightest chance to even draw one and then the belittling starts: "Where did you get your ridiculous rating? You are an idiot and play like one. When have you unlearned chess?" etc., etc. - all quotes from chat messages i have got over time.

To be honest, i commend Lichess for at least trying to prevent this. Yes, i can block and/or report such messages, but i want to have fun playing chess and this fun is decreased by experiencing such behavior. Reporting the culprit or blocking him doesn't restore what is already lost so i am glad measures are taken beforehand, not only after.

krasnaya
but there are many people trying out 960 for the first time. this will discourage players from playing 960.

960 is special in that the first opening moves can doom you if you're not careful.

i agree with Oscillations, that it's almost pointless to play on especially if you're at a disadvantage from the get-go by a blunder.

resigning after 1 blunder shouldn't be detemined as "losing on purpose". i oftentimes make sacrifices in hopes that i can recover, and eventually resign. will i be warned?
After a blunder, an adrenaline rush might happen. The mind might be more vigilant. So put it to good use and continue the game. Imagine winning with a bad start. People berserk and that handicaps their game. Some remove a piece and still win. To win at chess you must put some effort into it.

Lose a major pieces and its a major handicap. That's enough for me to want to resign. Then again it all depends if my rating is say 400 points greater than my opponents rating.

So if a person resigns in one or two moves, the rating difference and the piece lost should be considered before sending out a message to the person that resigned.
