Letting time run out instead of resigning. A suggestion to solve this problem.

Letting time run out instead of resigning.

A way to improve the solution that lichess provides to the prevalent and annoyingly frequent problem of people that let their time run out instead of resigning would be to add a button that the offended party could press to give more force to the complaint, this button would only appear as an option with the text that currently appears ("Warning, ______. Letting time run out instead of resigning will result in a temporary ban"). Just a few of these human confirmed complaints (4? 5?) would automatically ban the offender for a limited period (1 week?). These human confirmed complaints would have an expiration date (1 month?).
@Tantalus I don't really think we should allow users to have some sort of power over which other users get banned - this sort of system might get easily abused. I think the current system is ok, actually. Enable notifications in lichess and if your opponent leaves the game, just open a new tab and play another game while you let his time run out. If he sneakily comes back and moves, you will receive a notification. Then you can make more moves, at which point he will probably resign or completely leave the game in frustration.
This problem is very annoying.
Yesterday I was in a simultaneous and the player abandoned me and another player and went to play another game.
It's a lot of lack of education.
I think if a player starts a new game he should lose the game he left immediately.

I understand and share your concern, but with my proposed solution users would not have the power to get other users banned indiscriminately, because the option to report offenders (the "button" I mention) would ONLY be offered when the current warning message appears. You could only press that button, issuing a human confirmed complaint, when that message appears.

Yes. I've also met frequently players who quit the game they are playing with me after making a losing blunder, and instead of resigning, they start another game, let the time run down. My proposed solution would also quash this annoying custom.

If one player has left the game for whatever reason and the other player does the same thing. Do not both players get a message saying your player left the game and get the option to claim a win? Feature request Automatic claim to win in preference. Like auto queening a promotion on a premove.

Beep when the player comes back like an alarm clock so you don't have to wait in front of the screen. A bit like being put on hold on a telephone. You put it on speaker mode and leave the phone on the table and do something else.

If you also leave the game to play someone else while waiting for that player, then both of you will have a green light turning off and on like you were going for assistance. You will be playing simultaneously two games at the same time. It should then be indicated to the players that they are now in simultaneous mode.

Present solution: Play one game at a time and wait for the move or the message to claim the win.
If you want to play multiple games at a time, feel free to create a simultaneous exhibition for that.

A solution for this might be that players who let time run out,get automatically kicked off from lobby page for 1 day. Also, just leaving the game lets an option for opponent to claim victory. So the idea is:If you get claimed let's say 3 times, then you get banned from lobby games let's say for 1 week.If this happens repeatedly, then you get banned for longer(for 2 weeks,1 month,2 months etc..)What do you think?
Explaining the consequences to an action or lack of, should be given to show the full picture of what happens when an action or lack of is done.

Blunders in chess happen and so do errors in leaving players waiting. A player may need to answer the telephone or the door or go to the restroom and for what ever other reasons.
There cannot be punishments because nobody knows why the player left the game.

A message could be sent to the player at fault to teach them how to properly exit a game.
The message would have to be acknowledged before the player could continue to play another game. They would have to press the okay button and wait a given number of seconds. The same number of seconds that a player would have to wait for the acknowledge button to claim a win for a game.

Excellent suggestion!
Seems to me that a significant number of chess players on this site are just incredibly rude and demonstrate poor sportsmanship. I cannot believe how times I have seen players let time run out because they are having a sulk. It is classless behaviour but unfortunately as I interact more and more with people who grew up on line, the lack of courtesy is legion. It is quite astonishing. When I have played in real tournaments, my opponents have been nothing but polite, friendly and willing to help in analysis after I have lost or won a game. I am more and more tempted to abandon on line chess.
