Friend list

I love the new website layout, but how in the world is there not yet an easy way to view your friends (to challenge them to a game, to see their games, etc)? I love lichess but I find this incomprehensible. Perhaps I am missing something?

If a friend is offline, I dont see how, besides manually looking them up, I can challenge them to a game.
Online friends show up in the "online friends" list in the bottom-right corner of the website.

A full list of online and offline friends can be reached by going to your profile, clicking "X Followers", and then from that page, clicking the "Y following" list.

Not on mobile they don't!
@Doofenshmirtz On mobile in the app, if you have friends online a new icon will appear. If there's no one online, no icon will show. I do not know about the mobile browser though.
I'v always felt this "Online friends" widget a little bit alien on lichess site. The main reasoning of v2 responsive redesign was to give users all functionality on all devices from one code base. Telling "On mobile they don't appear to save space on the screen." contradict this IMO. Maybe it's time to rethink how lichess should present online friends.
I never liked the friends list. It should be under your profile somewhere in case you want to look at it, not on top of whatever is on the bottom of the screen with no way of removing it.
I use online friends to monitor my bots:

This is very useful for me. If I open lichess, I immediately see that all my bots are online and happy.

I appreciate the concerns of others, but for admittedly selfish reasons I ask not to remove this feature.
I just don't get why there is a permanent box on the screen allocated to friends, and yet if none of your friends are online, it says "No friends online" and then helps you find new friends---which again you won't be able to see unless they're online.

Also, I am likely missing something, but I tried "going to your profile, clicking "X Followers", and then from that page, clicking the "Y following" list" and I have no idea where these are. I dont see anything saying X followers.

Even then, however, I just dont get why that is the easiest way to track down a friend and challenge him to a game, or see his/her recent games.
