Why not have a bughouse variant on Lichess? Bughouse is popular and fun as week as being great tactical training.
Maybe you missed it, but Lichess already has the 1v1 version of it, called Crazyhouse.
2v2 games would require a lot more programming effort, too much for "just" a variant, I guess.
And the part that distinguishes crazyhouse from normal bughouse the most (social interaction with your teammate) would be even more difficult to import into the online setting anyways (mandatory voice chat, etc.).

perhaps you could take an idea from chess.com, I know chess.com isn't that awesome of a site anyways, but have shorthand buttons to ask for things that might be needed. Programming this wouldn't be reinventing the wheel and I think it would help bring in fans of bughouse or whatever variant that we want to implement.
I know about crazyhouse but bughouse is a somewhat different game. I don't know about the practical problems, I'm just floating an idea.
Bughouse on lichess is being developed by the wonderful nearvan at bughousetest.com. We have a discord server where we often have tournaments and stuff (discord.gg/RhWgzcC).
bughousetest.com
The server is down right now, still waiting for that tho.

@ProfDrHack we circumvent the communication problem by organising bughouse games from our Discord server, The House, for variants. We're also the loudest advocates for bughouse being added to lichess. dscrd.me/housechessvariants
