About me

I am a FIDE Master in the Portland Metropolitan Area (Washington State area). Chess is a passion of mine and I have continued to improve in adulthood.

In my professional life, I hold a CPA and a MBA. I enjoy solving puzzles and strategy.

In my personal life, I enjoy television, playing guitar, travel, reading, and family.

Playing experience

I have played chess in tournaments since 9 years old. I was the US Junior Open Champion, a chess master, 3 time State HS Champion of TX, Denker Tournament of Champions 2nd place, National Collegiate Runner up, and TX Collegiate Champion. I have also won the Houston Chess Festival.

I understand and remember what it was like to work your way up and I know what it is like to play a GM over the board.

Teaching experience

I have taught individuals, clubs, and camps with students of all ages. I have worked with students from 1600 to expert.

I am looking for a students ready to work and advance!

Independent work with a coach to guide you through roadblocks and help you avoid dead ends is important. You will save 100s of hours with coaching vs trying to figure everything out on your own.

Other experiences

Working, teaching, and leading in a corporate environment. Public speaking and community service.

Best skills

I explain concepts clearly, engaging, & in ways that you will remember in your games. I am strong tactically and positionally.

I am definitely a practical player and teach psychology as well as tournament/game strategy.

We will work to build your strengths, turn weaknesses into strengths, and build consistency.

Teaching methodology

Lessons are tailored to the student. I want you to work on areas that will result in the most improvement. You only improve your chess by challenging yourself.

Lessons are conducted online and can be recorder for later viewing. I send and recommend material for study.

Please study tactics daily. Tactical and positional play must be used together to achieve chess strength.
