The 33rd Drogheda Chess Congress | Murray Challengers & Fox Major is a 6-round Swiss tournament, held from the 1st to the 3rd of June in Drogheda, Ireland.

Time control is 90 minutes for the entire game with a 30-second increment from move 1.

This broadcast is of Boards 1-2 of the Murray Challengers section for players in the Rating Band: <1640 ICU/FIDE, and the Fox Major section for players in the Rating Band <1800 and ≥ 1600 ICU/FIDE.

History

The Murray Challengers is named in memory of Jimmy Murray (died 1980s/90s), a founding member of Drogheda Chess Club in 1947. He enjoyed his chess so much that he used to whistle during his games in the club. He was a keen league player and former treasurer of the Club.

The Fox Major is named for Donnie Fox (1923-2005), who lived up to his name as a player, employing every ruse to entrap his opponents. A keen strategist and league player, he was president of Drogheda Chess Club on many occasions. The Fox family sponsor the section that now bears his name.
