-THE BEGINNING -
Once upon a time, there lived the Lichess family, composed by Mr Lichess, Ms Lichess and there 2 little kids: Pawn and Pawny.
They were poor and had very little to eat and they lived in an old wooden shack in the middle of a forest in France.
Surprisingly, they were all great chess players and their family had been really famous for this until the great war which drove the family to poverty.
But one day...
-THE GREAT CHANGE-
...One day a strange intelligent and young man came into the house of the Lichess. They were scared because they thought it would be a tax officer and they didn't have any money. But the man (whose name was Thibault Duplessis) claimed that he was a fan of the Lichess family and had been tracking down its location to befriend it. He said that he could help the family and make it famous for playing chess. The family was uncertain but Thibault looked like a good man and what he was promising was great. So they said yes and after packing their bags they went to Paris to meet with the mayor that would help them. But was Thibault to be trusted...
-PARIS-
There in Paris, the Lichess Family accompanied by Thibault admired the great city. They saw the Eiffel tower, the Arc of Triumph, the Louvre and even a group of people playing a chess competition in a park.
But everyone stared at them, it was very strange and they felt quite insecure but Thibault made them feel better by inviting them for lunch in a expensive restaurant before the meeting with the mayor. This made them believe 120% in their friend.
After the lunch they had a walk in the park and then went to the town hall for the meeting.
-THE MEETING-
When they reached the town hall, the mayor greeted them coldly and told them that the children couldn't come to the meeting. They were sad but they soon grew cheerful as they were promised a chocolate ice cream later.
When the adults entered the meeting room, they noticed that the entrances were guarded by big gorilla-looking police officers. It was strange.
-What do you want Mr Duplessis? Asked the booming voice of the mayor.
Thibault explained kindly his plans.
-And how much money do you need? Asked the mayor
-About 25.000 €
The mayor was astonished and grew furious:
-25.000€ That's a barbaric amount of money almost as large as my annual income. I refuse, now go!!!
Thibault tried to convince him:
- But sir, these people are actual champions, it will be great for France and the chess world, please.
But it's useless, the mayor explains: I DON'T CARE ABOUT THAT I ALREADY HAVE A CHESS WEBSITE TO LOOK AFTER AND LOT'S OF WORK SO LEAVE RIGHT NOW OR I WILL CALL THE AUTHORITIES!!!
The police usher them outside and forbid their enter.
Can we eat the ice creams now mom? -Asks pawny.
-FAREWELL-
Sitting in a bench at the park, the kids eating their chocolate ice creams and playing, Thibault and Mr and Ms Lichess talk about what they are going to do now.
Ms Lichess proposes finding another person to fund the business but Thibault assures her that by now everyone would reject us. And after a long time they decide that it is time to say our farewells.
After hugs and kisses and whining from the children, they part. Thibault goes to his homeland and the Lichess go back to their old shack in the forest under a heavy thunderstorm.
-THINGS GET WORSE-
But things get worse, soon pawny gets ill with fever because of the depression. But not only pawny is feeling under the weather, everyone in the family is sad because of that. Worst of all the tax officer comes unexpectedly and as they don't have any money their belongings and their house are confiscated and they are left in the streets under the rain of winter. This is horrible for pawny as she gets worse and worse. They can't call a doctor or a friend as they don't know anyone or have any money. The only person they know is Thibault but he doesn't respond to their letters (as he is visiting his grandpappy in Cuba)
In short, it looked as if the family was doomed and doomed too the great gift that they were born with.
-IDEA IN THE CARIBBEAN-
Thibault is in Cuba visiting his grandpappy. He is not aware of what is happening with the Lichess family back in France.
Lying down on a flouty in the sea, he thinks about his Lichess friends, about France and about the meeting they had with the mayor in Paris.
He thinks,
He rethinks,
He rethinks twice,
He thinks one more time,
The last booming words of the mayor in their meeting resonate in his head: "I DON'T CARE ABOUT THAT I ALREADEY HAVE A CHESS WEBSITE TO LOOK AFTER AND LOT'S OF WORK SO LEAVE RIGHT NOW OR I WILL CALL THE AUTHORITIES!!!"
"I ALREADEY HAVE A CHESS WEBSITE TO LOOK AFTER"
"A CHESS WEBSITE" he thinks,
"A CHESS WEBSITE" he rethinks
A CHESS WEBSITE!!!!!!
THAT'S IT!!!!
I HAVE GOT IT!!!
EUREKA!!!!!
Thibault shouts out load and quickly packs his bags and goes to catch the first plane to Paris.
"Sorry Grandpappy I have to go to save the day" he says before leaving
"Hmm, nowadays everyone thinks they are superheroes" is grandpappys response.
-A NOT SO MERRY RECONCILIATION-
When Thibault gets to Paris, he runs to the old shack in the forest where the Lichess family lived, but seeing no one there, he fears the worst, and running up and down the Parisian streets he finally finds, at the death of the night the Lichess family starved to death and pawny at the edge of it.
As fast as possible they run to a hospital but find their way blocked by a bunch of policemen with the mayor.
You think you will win don't you! he said, Well you won't!
Ms Lichess pleads for their entry as her little daughter in about to die.
The mayor just laughs and says: Well no problemo, just one less to deal with.
Ms Lichess starts crying.
Then Mr Lichess says: Will you let us pass, if we beat you at chess?
The mayor stares at him and starts laughing: You! Beat me at chess! Okay, but I warned you!
And summoning all the Grandmasters from Paris they start playing.
-THE INMORTAL GAME (OR PERHAPS NOT)-
And now the great game that will determine the fate of the Lichess family and of poor little Pawny starts.
-PAWNY'S FATE-
After beating the mayor and his allies in the great chess game, the Lichess family acompanied by Thibault go to the hospital to find a doctor that can cure Pawny.
After 2 hours of waiting, the doctor let’s them see Pawny. But the doctor brings with him very extremely bad news. He says that Pawny has a very rare disease called Sars Covid and that she has only 3 more hours to live.
Ms Lichess starts crying followed by Pawn and Mr Lichess and finally Thibault.
He says, between sobs: I came here to tell you- But suddenly, he is interrupted by a great flash of light which appears in the room...
-PAWNY'S FATE 2-
But suddenly, he is interrupted by a great flash of light which appears in the room... It's the chess God: HORSEY!!!
He says: "You have been grateful and good with others; you have helped others before you, even if you had nothing; and you have shown great bravery and talent in the chess game you recently played. I shall now gift you with the life your enemies have taken away from and make you recover from that dreadful illness you have and confine it to the ends of the world (until now)"
And after another great flash of golden light he was gone. There was a minute of silence, and Ms Lichess started crying again followed by the rest, but this time not of sadness but of happiness!
Pawny had recovered and was as good as new. The whole family and Thibault hugged her 100 times.
The only one acting weird was the doctor, who was so astonished at the aparation of the God and was shaking from head to toe.
He muttered: "I think it's time to retire".
-THE GREAT IDEA-
After they leave the hospital, Thibault tells them his great idea: TO MAKE A CHESS WEBSITE!!!
Everyone loves the idea at the moment and although it will be a very very difficult job, they know 120% that they will get there in the end.
They decide that in honor to the Lichess family, they will call the webiste, Lichess!
And little by little, tripping but getting up again in 2010, they finnally finish the greatest chess webiste in the world, which even though is little, within months, lichess was crammed with users from all over the world: America, Europe, India, etc, etc. Which enjoy a lot playing chess in Lichess, thanks to the amazing Lichess family and to Thibault Duplessis, who made a dream come true. Just as Thibault's grandpappy claimed later: "A superhero thing to do".
-LICHESS-
Lichess.org is a free/libre, open-source chess server powered by volunteers and donations.
In 2010, T̶h̶i̶b̶a̶u̶l̶t̶ D̶u̶p̶l̶e̶s̶s̶i̶s̶ the Lichess family and Thibault Duplessis began work on Lichess as a hobby project. The site was simple at the beginning, not even checking to see if moves were legal. He made the site open source, which means anyone is free to read the source code and make contributions. Gradually, the site improved and collected users as an enthusiastic volunteer staff assembled to help T̶h̶i̶b̶a̶u̶l̶t̶ D̶u̶p̶l̶e̶s̶s̶i̶s̶ the team build and maintain the site.
Today, Lichess users play more than a million games every day. Lichess is one of the most popular chess websites in the world while remaining 100% free. Most “free” websites subsist by selling ads or selling user data. Others do it by putting all the good stuff behind paywalls. Lichess does none of these things and never will. With no investors demanding profits, Lichess staff can focus on improving the site as their only goal.
Lichess, in my opinion, not just the BEST chess webiste in the history of the universe. It is also another home for me. Don't you think? :)
-WHAT NOW?-
Now, they all live happily ever after!
But, sadly the great team will have to separate, as they don't have a lot of time to see each other. Thibault, is very busy coding and making Lichess a better place and the whole of the Lichess family is on a tour around the world playing in chess tournaments. They even play with world champions and later on, the smallest member of the family would become the best chess player in the world: Pawny!
In short everything is well and everyone is happy.

Well, perhaps not. In the end the mayor gets sent to prison for trying to sabotage the Lichess family in a very important chess competition. But above of that, everything is good.

Well, okay, sometimes Thibault has to call the Lichess's to help him code something or to take care of grandpappy, but yes, yes and yes!
