What is the difference in rating between bullet, blitz, rapid and classic?
The answer will surprise you.Quite often when communicating with chess players live, I hear from them: “Yes, I have 2000 on Lichess,” while this person cannot make a single draw against me, although my rating is only fifty points higher, are they really deciding? Of course not. The whole point is that he tells me his rating in a bullet, and he tells him in rapid or classic.
Today I decided to find out what the difference in rating is between these controls. Let’s imagine that we have 2100 in classic on Lichess, we are stronger than 97% of players.
But with a rating of 2100 in rapid, we are stronger than 96% of players. With a rating of 2100 in blitz we are stronger than 94% of players, and with a rating of 2100 in bullet we are stronger than 91% of players. The difference with the classics is as much as 6 (!) percent.
Now let’s try to calculate what rating a person will have in blitz if he has X rating in rapid. For this, using information from open sources, I created the following table:
Bullet | Blitz | Rapid | Classic |
---|---|---|---|
1000 | 1000 | 1000 | 1150 |
1500 | 1500 | 1475 | 1475 |
2000 | 1925 | 1875 | 1875 |
2200 | 2100 | 2050 | 2000 |
2500 | 2325 | 2300 | 2200 |
After analyzing this table, we come to the conclusion: the higher the level, the greater the difference between fast and slow controls.
Play slow controls, analyze games, solve studies and your rating will increase. Thanks for reading!
