TEXT VERSION
If you are familiar with my channel, you might know that i am damn good at chess variants. Just look at this, almost every variant has over 2000 rating points. But we are not here to talk about my wonderful performance. We are going to rate every chess variant on lichess on hardness. Some of them are really easy, and, even with a bit of practice, you can be in the top 100 chess players of this variant, like i did with racing kings and horde. Okay, let’s check the easiest one of them.
KOTH
Okay, i know that many people with tell me that it is not easy, and i will agree - every variant is pretty hard, but, this one is the closest one to the classical chess. The only difference is that to win you can also put your king in the center. in the regular chess king in the center is such a rare event so there is only a little bit bigger chance that that will play a big role in the king of the hill. If your opponent tries to put his king in the center at the begging of the game, he can be easily mated. This variant is so low on this list also because of one major factor - if you are a grandmaster at chess, that will be a piece of cake to get 2500. But, if you are like 1000 rated, you are just out of game here. That is the difficulty of this variant - you need to be good at regular chess.
Three-check
This choice is controversial, i know, as you again need to be good at chess. But, here the situation is a bit different. To start, to win you need to mate opponent’s king or to do 3 checks. Obvious. But, Even if you are 1000 rated, you can easily get 1500 rating just at the beginning of the game. Just try to attack his king, learn some tricks, and hope that you will be good, as if he stays alive and he is strong in the regular chess, you are dead. Also, a big shotout for this lichess team that jelped this channel a lot. I still remember you.
Racing Kings
Now get ready for the easiest top 100 trophy on lichess - racing kings trophy. In this variant you need to put your king on the eights rank, but, the starting position is different. It is a bit higher on the list just because it is confusing at first and you need to learn some mechanics such as you cant do checks and if black king finishes at the next move that white finished, it is a draw. But, you just need to learn one simple tactic to crush even 1800 elo. By the way, i have a video about that, so, check it out if you are interested. And the rest is just practice - i easily got in top 100 and, if you want a trophy, that is the perfect choice.
Chess 960
Okay, i can see a lot of people commenting „that is just a regular chess, but with random starting position”, and, i understand you. But, let me explain. To start, if you are bad at chess, you are out. The main problem here is... random. You don’t have any strategy at the beginning and you need to think up something that is not 100% good. That is why the best way to play this is to play at least 30 minute chess to think up something. Personally, i hate this variant, as i just suck at this think. Openings are a really important thing. Okay, let’s move on tho the next one.
Horde
Oh man, i had a trophy with this variant, but, that was stupidly hard. I didn’t even want to get it, i just got lucky and won a strong opponent and then, just stayed on that rating. Let me explain the difficulty. To start, you can get two different set ups at the beginning - you can play by pawns or, you can play by the regular pieces. Pawn is also a regular piece. Anyway. You need to learn tactics for both of them. If you think it is easy to win with pawns as they are all defended? NO, you are wrong. At some point you won’t be able to defend some of them, and, with loose. It is a variant with practically no theory, and it is really hard to come up with something interesting and smart.
Okay, now let’s check the top three hardest lichess variants.
Atomic
Alright, you will ask me, what about this, i will tell you. It is bad. Completely bad. The new mechanics of explosion can easily show you how hard it is. Even the first few moves are almost forced. Black has only some moves to survive. It has a lot of theory, tricks and stupid endgames. Here kings can be close to each other to protect themselves and a lot a lot more. Even i don’t have 2000 on this variant. But, there is a big plus for the beginners - you can easily become good at this variant, as it doesn’t have much in common with the regular chess. Give it a try.
Antichess
Oh my god, this variant is hilarious. If you don’t know how to properly play it and will play regular e4, you are dead. There is a forsed variant to win. And there are a lot of this things. There are a lot of openings, traps, and the thing is just really confusing. You can have only one pawn, but you still lose, as your opponent somehow manages to loose all pieces. The endgames are another thing. You 100% need to know all of them to be good in this variant. I know most of them, i know a lot of traps, and, i am still 1900 rated. This variant is tough. But, if you are the beginner, it will be no problem to learn everything, as there is 0% of the normal chess in this variant. Is is one of the best chess variants for me, as it is interesting and so... comebackable? Is it the word? I don’t know. But, you probably already know what is the hardest variant of chess.
Crazyhouse
This variant is the hardest thing i have ever seen. It is like a small change that really feels really strongly. This variant has theory, tactics, combinations, sacrifices... This guy (a crazyhouse pro) did a huge lesson about this. And that is only for 2000 rating! That is a lot of things to think about, you need to play chess, but also you need to check if he can place a piece that will lead to some checkmate. The games there are sharp.
Some people just can sacrifice a knight at the beginning an that is good. Sometimes, the queen sacrifice for a pawn is good, as he just need a pawn to mate you. That is a lot of things tot consider. And the one more thing you need to know - you need to be good at regular chess too. That is why i am 100% sure that this is the hardest chess variant.
Okay, guys, i will be happy to see your ranking of the chess variants in the comments, as that is juts my point of view, i will be glad to read all of this. Hope you enjoyed, see you in the next video, cranberry.
