Open Files: How to Exploit them

It is good to focus on often propagated rules of thumbs and dissect them. I personally learn better focusing on that, my only measure of better here is my own rational understanding from the logic of chess. And diagrams exploiting our visual perception abilities are good tools toward such understanding. Given my understanding first performance later, I really enjoy this learning angle.

Rule of thumbs that geometrically seem mysterious. Like open file being possibly good for you. But geometrically/statically isn't it already a potential mobility highway for all rook-type of mobility? including opponent. So seems like a feature of the board more than an immediate advantage sided feature.

Semi-open on the other hand seems more sided. Anyway, I find the blog proposal a good teaching one. I would still have to go through it. But that is chess content transmission, is my comment.

Edit: semi-open too, if not just looking at rook properties of it, has 2 sided properties from the 2 or more new pawn islands that coincide with semi-open file creation, I was just referring to the rook mobility properties. Chess is full of things that might be dissected (and I bet earlier in improvement trail than one might think, or I am confusing understanding and performance).
Excellent article about open files. Very concise and compact, but well thought and well written.
> Now the White Rook will become very active, with the option to go to the 7th rank and attack Black’s pawns, as well force Black’s Rook and King to protect the pawns.

From nimzo, I was aware of the 7th rank probability of pawn food for the rook type (including queen), or the sweeping rook move thing. But this notion of "force rooks and king" (or entice, or pressure) to protect the pawns, is nice to see written too. It is logical and visible at current position (or it is now, and I won't be able to forget that). (I think the diagram near the text help a lot same eye gaze angle or near). Explicitly reminding what is logical is not superfluous, it is what chess is at rule-set. (any game is, about cranking rules known to all parties).

being aware of jobs as mobility restrictions.. something to keep in mind in general. That is a good point, that goes beyond the context. I knew of the idea, but to see it combined here. makes the reading further promising.

(restriction here is negative pressure?)
thank you so much!
this is probably one of my favorite posts
Excellent article focusing on related concepts and how to take advantage of them with well-chosen illustrative examples. This is how to write a chess blog on chess concepts!
