I like the comparison you make with language. In its everyday conversational use language is very much a skill that reunites abilities that run below the conscious level. I am nearly 60 and I learnt Portuguese to fluency through immersion in 4 years and at the same time I am continually improving in chess. It is not easy to explain how these things happen but your immersion concept is close, with of course the desire to win ;-)
