Keyboard extensions are now banned

In short: if you arrived to this page from a game, you need to uninstall keyboard extensions from your browser to keep playing.

New fair play rule

We have introduced a new rule to Lichess fair play:

We prohibit the use of any program or browser extension that assists with playing moves. The only legal ways to play moves on Lichess are with the official Lichess APIs for Boards and Bots, or by interacting directly with the official Lichess graphical user interface (GUI). Programmatic usage of the GUI for playing moves is forbidden. However, custom styles and graphical tweaks of the play interface are allowed, using CSS.

This prevents use of the keyboard and multi-premove extensions.

Consequences of the ban

These extensions were tolerated until now, so players who have been using them in the past will not be sanctioned in any way. However, their use being now prohibited, players will receive a warning when the extension is loaded, and won't be able to play games until the extension is removed from their browser.

Players who attempt to go around this ban in any way, or to modify the extensions to bypass detection, will have their account marked for fair play violations by the moderators.

Reasons for the ban

Extensions that assist with playing moves have denatured fast chess to the point that many players won't play it anymore. We believe that banning keyboard extensions will result in UltraBullet and HyperBullet becoming more popular.
