I feel that Magnus does the same thing with the middle game, against players like Fabi he knows he will be outclassed so he tries to get to dead equal positions and then squeeze them.

That is a very good point - there are potentially better hard working opening theoreticians than Magnus Carlsen, so Magnus kind of plays quite often off-beat lines just to get playable middlegame positions and show where his true relative strengths are in the middlegame and endgame.
