People actually play to these sorts of positions? Christ that's arrogant.

I saw it at last night's tournament I went to as well. I looked around the room and saw a couple players mindlessly pushing pawns, when they could have instantly mated with just the one queen they already had.
Better to mindlessly push some pawns and get a safe win, than make a mistake doing a more "elegant" checkmate? Although in my experience, delaying to be "safe" can be just as mistake-fraught as pressing ahead.
I don't remember ever making mistakes doing elegant checkmates except with the King-bishop-knight versus King endgames, which are extremely hard for most.

Maybe it's a development maturity thing, but I personally think 99% of competent tournament players who know what they're doing are more than capable of flawlessly mating with just King and Queen and nothing else if they weren't so goddamn lazy or arrogant. I know most people on this site can do it effortlessly, except for stalemate in 1+0.
