It's funny, I posted a comment in the Chess Facts thread that was started a while back which is quite pertinent here. There is actually no difference between white moving first and black moving first except that the board is reflected across the vertical axis. Furthermore, white having the first move is actually a fairly modern convention. Up until the 1930s, it was usually the case that the player having the first move would also choose which colour of pieces he would like to play with. In matches consisting of multiple games, the player having the first move would alternate but the colour of pieces he played with would not.

Nowadays, I feel like the average chess player lacks appreciation for the geometry of the board and its symmetry. Case in point, the conmment which said that kings would have to go on the d-file. Of course they wouldn't. Back in the early modern period of chess, players would record their games in descriptive notation, so regardless of which colour moved first, openings and moves would be identical regardless of the colour of pieces moving first – descriptive notation really captured the symmetry and geometry of the board in a way that algebraic notation can't. Not only that, but the fact that they thought in descriptive notation meant that black moving first wouldn't destroy their opening knowledge. 1. e4 e5 is 1. e5 e4 if black plays first but in descriptive notation, it is 1. P-K4 P-K4 regardless of who plays first.

This information serves two purposes. First and foremost, it dispels the misconception that white moving first in chess is any kind of commentary on racial superiority, or the idea that the colours of the pieces in chess are anything to do with race. Secondly, it highlights the abject stupidity of insisting on changing a well established convention – a law of our game no less – because of the some irrelevant power struggle in the US. And by that I mean it is irrelevant to chess, it is clearly relevant to people's lives. I support the aims of the BLM movement and I would desperately love to see institutional racism called out at every turn. What I don't support is the notion of politicising chess. It is already arguably the most politicised sport in the world in terms of how its international governing body allows its players and federations to behave – the situation that Alireza Firouzja has had to deal with illustrates this perfectly.

This is a board game for goodness sake. Leave it alone. Let the player with the white pieces move first, or go back to letting the player with the first move choose the pieces he wants to play with. Just don't make these decisions because of something which had nothing to do with the game.

This topic either makes a mockery of a serious subject or [redacted due to the lichess policy of enforcing niceness]
You should switch to Go or Shogi, black move first there.
