#10 I disagree. Rating is attached to ego, giving it a much more potent influence over action than karma scores.
#11 Fine, then hide player ratings altogether and visually replace them with karma scores.

As I said, rating is just a metric to match you and indicates how likely you are to win a match up. If a dude is 8 points higher than you, he is probably just a tiny bit better at that point. You are not wondering “well, maybe I’m better but I’m a little bit more emotional when I lose”. I don’t know what to think about your ego being attached to that. Being a tool, it has to be valid and reliable: we can do that only if we don’t start adding random rating gifts / penalties at moderator discretion. There will never be a way to change your rating that doesn’t come from the result of a game.
