"take a win" option with disconnection problems

You keep making these extremely complicated, subjective arguments about "White is better so Black should not be awarded a win"...

I argue that games should be played ICC-style where a temporary disconnection does not result in a loss. Both players agreed to the time control, so why should an (assumedly) temporary disconnection change that contract between the players? But this would also mean that frequent disconnections would need to result in some sort of playban/play-restriction.

True. But it is in line with lichess policy of punishing disconnections. Just proposition to make this policy more fair.

Objectively, the disconnected player should lose on time (no matter if he is worse or better). That is the only way to conclude the game according to the rules of chess in this situation. And I am fine with it. No need to propose any options at all strictly saying.
The point is that currently better-connected side gets "claim a win" button way-way before opp runs out of time.
Before the claim a win feature, the opponent had to run out of time and it was far worse. It allowed people in completely lost positions to leave the game (sometimes when there was a mate in 1) and force me to sit there for 20 minutes while they are unaffected. This system means that if they try to be annoying, then they also have to endure the wait on the site. The introduction of the feature has had a huge positive impact on the site by essentially extinguishing this problem.

This is a benefit for all lichess members, and greatly outweighs the slight drawback that it has on the small minority that try to play with a terrible connection.
Oh boy... despite not being a moderator (nor wanting to be one) I'll express my unpopular personal opinions as a chess expert. Ugh...

"Claim Victory" & "Claim a Draw" do not belong in a game of chess. Furthermore, they are inconsistent (for non-disconnects) and their implementation parts from OTB tradition: if my American GM opponent in a lost position walks away, why can't I announce mate (in the same manner as for a disconnect)?

In summary, it seems I disagree with everyone about everything...

I agree. But douchebags do not belong in a game of chess either. How often have you experienced someone walking away from a lost position OTB?
#25. No, I agree with you :)
If lichess wants to implement crystal clear rules, like it was implemented with all those N+K or B+K wins, then the only way to win (even stricter "to end the game") would be to wait until your opp runs out of time when he is disconnected. And I am totally for it.

There are always assholes. Sometimes they do not even close the browser tab and can make you wait 20 minutes 1 move before mate even being perfectly connected. I meet them extremely rare, because normally my 2100+ opps take a game seriously enough.

About playing with horrible connection, yes, it's true :( I like to play. Since I play 20+10, 2 mins of disconnection should not be a problem for the game itself, but sometimes my opps decide to f*ck me, especially when they are lost. So, I have a winning position and lots of time on my clock and I still have to lose because lichess decided that it is time for me to lose and my opp agreed with it. How is it fair?

Engine check before presenting the options is a compromise. It does not make rules "crystal clear", but so they are not now if everyone can "claim a win". But at least it will hold a balance between rage-quitters and "true disconnections".
I couldn't agree more with Alex and Timid. And I think the problem can be solved by coding it proper eg.
if you hit the x and close the page there could be a warning like there is if you want to delete something. 'If you leave the game now, your opponent can claim a win' then and only then the 'claim a win' button should appear(if you one left the game).
In case of a disconnect, it would not appear cause the x hasn't been pressed.
If they are away from the tab then it counts as "away" and you can claim a win. They have to stay on the actual tab now.

And the fact that there are less 2100+ assholes who make you wait means that you are an even smaller minority, since most players are around 1500 here. Sorry Alex but you are asking to resolve an issue that would help a very small percentage of players (strong with weak internet) while it is benefitting everyone else.
