When looking at a ongoing game sometimes other watchers make comments and suggest moves, but I assume the players only see chat from their opponent?
Yes, there are two different chat interfaces--the Room Chat and the Spectator Chat. The former is only visible to the two players, whilst the latter is only visible to anyone watching the game.

The players, however, can post in the spectator chat by starting the message with "/w" or "/whisper" and such messages do not appear in the player chat.
