Loss when it should be a draw?

@Technobladeee is it not supposed to be that white needs sufficient material to force mate? not if Black is stupid enough to blunder into mate by assisting white?

Aren't there rules about forcing a draw in this situation?
You could accidentally get into a position where mate is possible. :)
Neither player can force checkmate, however either player can be checkmated and so the game is ruled in favor of the player who didn't time out.
We need a simple heuristic for judging quickly if a position is drawn or not. We are humans, not tablebases!

Lichess should never follow fide. Fide is terrible. Everyone agrees.
You want a simple heuristic? Here it is!

* Can player mate?

You want an easy rule of thumb? Here:

Knight mates against anything but queen
Bishop mates against anything but rook or queen (or same-colored bishop, which is immediately a draw)
It should be if they can force mate, not if they can mate.
